Ethics in Readings
Charles

A few years ago I had the radio in my car on as I drove along. I was listening to a talk program that took phone calls as a part of the program. A woman called in, obviously very upset. She had, not too much earlier, had an abortion. I have no idea why she had decided to have the abortion, she didn’t say. And that is not the important thing here. What is important is this. She had very recently had a reading from a local "psychic medium." That "medium" had told this poor woman that she could see and hear this lost, baby soul crying for its mother, the woman that was receiving the reading. As a result of that "information" this poor woman was feeling a tremendous burden of guilt.

Now what had happened here? Obviously the "medium" was a fake, one of the majority of those calling themselves mediums who are charlatans. Don’t misunderstand me here, there are some genuine mediums who are very good. I have known a few. But it is unfortunate that the majority of those who label themselves as mediums have no more ability in that area than a bedpost. And bedposts are rare these days. So the "medium" was a charlatan, that in itself was bad enough. But she had to compound her sin by attaching her own agenda to what she was telling this poor woman. She was obviously anti abortion. So she decided to punish her victim by laying a guilt trip on her with the story of the "lost, baby soul crying for its mother."

It all boils down to a matter of ethics. Obviously, this phoney medium didn’t have any. If she had she would not have been claiming to be what she was not. As another ethical matter, trying to punish someone else for not living according to your own ideas is also wrong. And that is just what she had done to this poor distraught woman.

All of us, to some extent or other, are psychic. And all of us to some extent or other have mediumship abilities. And when I use the term "us" here, I am talking about humanity in general. Most of us have not trained our abilities and really don’t pay any attention to them and are not even aware of them. But there are others of us who are aware of our abilities and have to some degree trained them. Unfortunately, many of us who are aware of our innate abilities and do use them have not considered the ethical questions that are involved with the use of those abilities.

Let me give an example. We all know how we can see or hear something and forget about it. Then years later suddenly "remember" it. We may not remember where it came from, just that sudden flash of memory is there. Now lets say that in 1968, I saw a horror movie, and in that movie there was a demon. I had forgotten all about the movie and had not thought of it since 1968. Now assume that I am giving a "reading" of some sort to someone, and suddenly the memory of that demon in the movie flashes through my mind. Do I tell the other person that I saw a demon while I was doing their reading? Of course not. "But," you may say, "you saw the demon while you were doing the reading, why wouldn’t you tell them?" This is where the ethics come in. Unless I can absolutely verify that the vision of that demon is a warning to them of some danger, it would be very unethical to even mention it and worry them needlessly. Or assume that I saw or heard something else negative, and it was something that they could do absolutely nothing about, it again would be unethical to mention it and cause them needless distress about which they could do nothing.

So the ethics involved here are simple. Don’t tell someone something negative that they have absolutely no control over and can do nothing about. Keep your readings positive. If you get a warning for someone, and they can take steps to avoid the danger that you see, by all means tell them. Also know how to interpret what you may see. I know of one case where one woman saw another woman lying in a casket. It freaked her out and she would not tell the other woman what she saw. And this really worried the second woman. The first woman thought that this vision meant that the second woman was going to die. But what it actually meant was that an old way of life was dying and that the second woman was going to be experiencing a new, spiritual life. Incidently, the last that I heard, the second woman is still alive and well and has become a very spiritual person.

There are other ethical matters involved on other ethical subjects, but they are the matter for another tirade.
